Description: SISC water aerobics, back, arthritis workouts, and water walking exercise classes are taught by certified instructors through Iredell County YMCA. Classes are open to all seniors age 60 or better with priority given to Iredell County residents. Information on guidelines and fees are available upon request. It is recommended that new participants observe their class of choice before registering. Private lessons are available for the disabled, visually or physically impaired. Classes are taught between 8 a.m.and 1 p.m. M-F.

Description: Recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, it’s good for the body, mind, and spirit. Tai Chi may help some individuals to improve high blood pressure, balance, muscle tone, circulation, flexibility, aching backs and joints. It has even helped some to lose weight. Mike Gentile, a certified physical trainer and AF instructor, and Reiki master will teach the class starting Mon., Sept. 8 – Oct. 13 (six weeks) from 11 – noon. Cost is $36 per person.

Description: Tai Chi is a centuries old Chinese discipline for health, relaxation, balance, flexibility, strength, meditation, self-defense and self-cultivation. It improves circulation, balance, coordination, and helps relax and strengthen the muscular and nervous systems.
The stretching movements make the body limber, tone up muscles, and help release tension. As a meditation, Tai Chi is a way of harmonizing body, mind and spirit, dynamically.

Description: Assistance for seniors in filing for the Economic Stimulus Plan Tax Rebate is availabe at South Iredell Senior Center. If you received Social Security benefits last year, even if you are not otherwise required to file a tax return, you may still be entitled to an economic stimulus payment from the federal government. All you have to do to get the stimulus payment is file a 2007 IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040A and report at least $3,000 in qualifying income on the form. Yes, you can include the amount of your SSA benefits to qualify for the stimulus payment. Add the amount of your Social Security benefits to other qualifying income, such as wage earnings or certain benefits paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs, to reach the $3,000 requirement. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not count as qualifying income for the stimulus payment. You have until October 2008 to file for the stimulus tax rebate, but the sooner you file the sooner you can get your money. South Iredell Senior Center is offering transportation and assistance to seniors in completing the form. An appointment is required and transportation request must be made at least two days in advance M-F by calling 704-663-5112. In late March the IRS mailed a packet of information to recipients of Social Security benefits who did not file a tax return last year. The packet will contain guidance to help you claim the stimulus payment. Please bring this information with you to your appointment. More information is available at www.IRS.gov.

Description: The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a workshop given once a week for six weeks for people with different chronic health problems. Classes are highly participative. Mutual support and success build participant confidence in their own ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Subjects covered will include: dealing with frustration, fatigue, and pain, exercising for improving strength, flexibility and endurance, appropriate use of medications, how to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, nutrition, and how to evaluate treatments. Sponsored by the Centralina Area Agency on Aging, classes are free and will be held at the South Iredell Senior Center starting Sept. 24 through Oct. 29, 2008. Classes will be every Wednesday for six weeks from 1-3:30 p.m. Participants will receive training materials and refreshments will be provided. Space is limited so please sign up early. Description: The theater group meets every Wednesday at 2 p.m., at the South Iredell Senior Center and is lead by Jack Rhoades. The group is taking auditions now for a play production the last of October called “Soap Opera.” No experience is necessary to join the group. Stage, scenery, seamstress and other volunteer help is needed and appreciated. Screenings for performers and volunteers will be done by Jack Rhoades.

Description: Speaker: Cecil Cline, Son of Appalachia, High School Drop Out, Combat Soldier, College Graduate, Rocket Engineer
Author Cecil will tell of his first hand experiences in the Korean War. "A Soldier's Odyssey" presents an inspiring story of the resolute power of the human spirit across a wide range of events; a high school dropout, a wounded combat soldier, a self sufficient university student, a space program research engineer, and a businessman.
The Davidson Senior Scholars has formed to provide programs that stimulate continual intellectual and cultural growth. The general format of the meetings is that of lecture followed by question and answer. The speakers are experts in their fields and may include Davidson college professors and physicians. Programs are free. Monthly meetings take place from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Parks and Recreation office.
